Senior High Youth Ministry gets a New Look

Over the summer, the SHYM Leadership Team decided to re-evaluate high school youth ministry in light of the Parish’s renewed identity statements. Getting our arms around this renewal process will be a work in progress just like it is for the parish.

Many things will look and feel the same; some things will change because high school students have changed. Our desires, cultures and priorities are different than they were in generations past. Perhaps the biggest change to date is our name: the name FOCUS has been replaced with IGNITE! The Leadership Team believes that this name better represents the passion and desire many of our high school teens have in growing as disciples and the call of disciples to actively build the Kingdom of God in today’s world.

IGNITE! desires to reach as many high school teens as possible. Two years ago we started offering FOCUS on Wednesday nights as well as on Sunday nights for the simple reason that all high school students are not available on Sunday nights. This year IGNITE! will again offer high school faith formation on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. Sunday IGNITE! will take place at St. Francis of Assisi beginning with social time at 6:30 pm. The topic discussion will begin at 7:00 pm and end by 8:30 pm. Wednesday IGNITE! will be held in the St. Francis Library. When possible, IGNITE! will duplicate topics on Sunday and Wednesday; so teens can chose the night that best works for them.

Prayer is a very big part of IGNITE!, so we will be providing many opportunities for prayer including XLT Eucharistic Adoration just like we have been for the last few years. On those Sunday evenings, we will not have a faith formation topic.

Being a part of the larger faith community of St. Francis of Assisi is also important to IGNITE! We will therefore be plugging in to Generations of Faith and inviting our families to come with us. On those Sundays, we will be gathering in the afternoons and not in the evening.

Check back next month as we share more exciting news of our journey of renewal.
